This is our grandson Ben , I might be seeing something that others don't see but I see an artist in the making.

First here is Ben with a piece of fence post that he found behind the garage. And I thought "That's a boy for you". Lugging logs around.

But then later I here him call for his Mom and me to come see the "Sculpture"( His word) that he was making. He had put the fence post up on end and found a quartz rock, covered it with a dry leaf and as I watched he said that it needed some "color", so he pulled up some grass and sprinkled it on top.

Then he was off looking for a flower for some more color.

Quilt Out Loud Garden Party

This winter I had been mulling around in my mind the idea of having a Garden Party and inviting all my artists friends. I called it "Celebrating Women And Their Art" So I picked the date of June 26 and starting planing . This was going to be a wonderful party, friends, good food, some drinks and everyone brought one piece of art for show and tell. My Mother was the feactured artist. My friend Bunny Goode brought this to the attention of the wonderful people of "Quilt Out Loud" and before we knew it Jodie Davis and Mark Lipinski were coming to join the fun. My daugther Rebecca toke some pictures in between getting the food and drinks out . I should have been taking pictures also but there was so much going on that I was over whelmed . The pictures could have been better but I am happy that we have what we have. Enjoy.

I am showing Mark the quilt that I had started putting together out of silk fabric that I had collected. The finished piece is the little viking girl waiting for the ships to come to shore.

Here my Mom and Mark are having a few laughs.

Pictorial Quilt

I had a very good time making this pictorial wall hanging. It is 23" long by 21" high, made mostly with hand dyed silk, except for the dark green silk and the black silk, they were clothes that I wore out. Does that make me a hoarder? Saving old clothes?? You never know when you will be able to use this or that ;)) The little viking girl now has a stitched face.

She is standing on the cliffs, trying to hold down her hair, dress and apron in the Icelandic wind. If you have ever been to Iceland you know all to well about the wind. I don't think she is to upset about standing on the cliff in the wind. More excited about the ships coming home from their shopping trip.....

Here is the photo that got me thinking about making this wall hanging. This is our daugther Rebecca standing on a ferry as we cross from Denmark to Sweden . We were living in Germany at that time and enjoyed taking week-end trips. She was trying not to blow away.

Now I have the little Viking girl on the cliff , she seems to be leaning . Lets make believe that it's the wind pushing her backwards.

Pictorial Quilt

Starting a new pictorial quilt. I, like most artist have a way of making a mess, disorder or chaos were ever I am sewing. Hopefully something nice will come out of this mess. I have taken my big table and plopped it right in the middle of my living room!! Who cares? I don't, anarchy rules the day.

What I have in mind is the Icelandic landscape. Using a photo of our daugther Becca that was taken on a ferry in Denmark as a guide. I would like to have a wind blown young Viking girl looking out for ships coming to shore.

This is what I have in mind, whether I am able to translate this into my quilt will be seen. I am using some hand dyed silks and also some silks from some well loved clothes that I have worn until they were falling apart.

After a wonderful party with family and friends I was greeted with a beautiful morning.

But first I had to rescue some ants that for what ever reason (only they knew) were stranded on the floating candles that Rebecca had put in the pond for our enjoyment.

Only then was I able to sit and enjoy the paper with my cup of coffee.

And this is a wonderful place to have your coffee first thing in the morning before all the noise of the world invades .

With all my heart I would like to thank my loving daugther Rebecca, my wonderful sons Jason and Aaron for all the help that they did in the house and the garden in preparation for this get together. My sister-in-law Audrey was a big help, with out her and Rebecca I don't think that I would of pulled this off. Also my friend Bunny Goode who was the catalyst for bringing me to the attention of Mark Lipinski and Jodi Davis of Quilt Out Loud, qnntv.com who came and I hope had a good time with us. There is more to this story and when I have the information I will be shearing that with you.

Art Quilt

A very long time ago , around 1970-71 I sketched a somewhat racy picture of myself and Michael on a piece of notebook paper. You can see that the picture is fading with time but the memories are still strong. I came across it after having to look at more paper work. The act of making this wall art hanging has keep me occupied during the long evenings. It is 23"-13" and is mostly hand sewn. Hope that I won't be shocking our children by posting this on my blog ;-)

In 1998 I made what I call "The Mushroom Gatherers" , two young elves ,who were in love sitting on a bench in the woods.

Many, many years later a friend emailed us a photograph that he had come across while checking out a site called "Upstage". Upstage was a coffee house in Asbury Park in the 60' that all the up and coming musicians played in, including my husband Michael. So about 3 or 4 years ago we get to see a picture of the two of us on our second date, very cool. It was a real surprise to see after all this time.

Now, what I would like to point out is how similar the photo and the two elves look. From the color of what I am wearing, my flower shirt, the girl elf is wearing floral tights . Michael is wearing his buck skin jacket( very hip for the times) the boy elf has a buck skin hat and you can't see in the picture but he has a leather vest on. Even how I made the elf's hand around the girls waist, you would of thought that I had copied from the picture. Just have to wonder...

Eyjafalljokull volcano Iceland Pictorial Quilt

Fabric wall hangings, a new creative outlet. Very enjoyable. I looked at many photos of the volcano that erupted in Iceland last spring and I was fascinated with the pictures that were taken at night, with the green northern lights dancing in the night sky behind the plume of smoke. The smoke I felted onto the fabric using Icelandic lopi wool.

Once I started looking for the reds that I needed for the lava I was amazed at what I had on hand. I shouldn't have been surprised, fabric hoarder ... and some of them glow.

Some weeks ago I had been out with my friend Bunny at a wonderful quilt store called "Quilting Possibilities"in Forked River NJ. Like I needed more fabric but they had a great selection of prints that work well in landscapes. I tried to catch the force and beauty of nature. It measures 18"-27".

Hot Flash ! A Celebration

A Very Red Couch

We inherited my husbands, mothers, cousins, couch that was just sitting there unused for years. I liked the look of it, one long cushion and sturdy . Well built, good bones you could say. So I estimated it needed 11 yards, was off by one yard to much, no pattern to fuss with and very red. Don't think that my fingers will ever be the same.

Many years ago while working at JoAnn Fabric's I started to think about making a wall hanging of Viking ships coming to the shores of Iceland. So I bought the fabric that I thought looked like wood and the ocean and night sky and this is what came out of that. The wall hanging is about 18"by23",not all the way around, it is crocked, but I was winging it. This has been a lot of fun, wonder what the next project will be?

I saw a woman on TV a few months ago having young children draw a picture and then she would help them too applique a small wall hanging from the picture. So there aren't any dolls dancing in the back of my head at this time, so I thought that this would be a fun new project to do, some hand work in the evening. This is a picture that our granddaughter Finna had sent to me as a thank you note for making a heart necklace for her . I am sending this to her tomorrow, and now I am going to find some of my children old pictures and make them each one, I had such a good time doing this.

Quilters have been recycling old worn out family garments into quilts for decades. I also like to incorporate our old favorite clothes into my work. This new piece is called "Dancing at Woodstock". She stands 13" tall, her long skirt is my well worn old hippy skirt and her blouse is my Mothers cotton gauze nightgown. I get a kick out seeing what can be done with found and recycled objects.

I like the word FEY, it has many meanings like "wild or crazy acting", often ascribed to supernatural causes, odd, elfin, puckish, eccentric, whimsical and otherworldly. Also some not very nice meanings but we will disregard them. If I had to pick one word to describe my wonderful creative friends that is the word!! YO-YO QUILT AND FLOWERS

I have been working on restoring a Yo-Yo quilt that was given to me last year. It was in better then fare condition, mostly I just had to resew the yo-yo's back together were they have come on done. Here it is all finished out in the garden with the flowers this morning. If there is some one who can tell from the pictures what decade they think that the fabric if from please let me know, I am interested in knowing.

I was on my way to Iceland last week but a volcano got in my way...a long story. I had wanted to see the eruption and since I was not able to I made my on interpretation of the event. So here goes.....

The ash cloud is made from un-spun Icelandic sheep's wool, I think the the color is just right. How things look in my mind and how they come out my fingers don't always work out but you have to take a chance.

I started to work in the garden late this year, seems that it takes me longer to clean up after winter has had his way. There is sooo much that has to be moved, taken down , put up, divided and so on. But for now I am just enjoying the plants as they show them self all new and happy to be back.

I am trying to learn how to work with paper clay. So far I'm having a good time but that dose not always translate into a nice work of art. The face is clunky , the eyes protrude and she has a slight over bite ( like me) we make what we are familiar with. With time I hope to get better.
She is wearing a dress that was to become a sleeve for a dress that my Aunt Soffia had started to knit and didn't finish, her clogs are also knitter Icelandic Lopi wool . She is holding knitting needles and yarn, excited with a idea for a new project.

Our family cat Ed Norton died two weeks ago. He would have been 20 years old this coming spring. He was found in the local sewer (hence the name) or a gutter drain and came to live with us as a tiny kitten , his eyes newly open. He was never a cat that liked to be cuddled , he just as soon as bite or scratch you. Not a very great full cat but we miss him and hope that he is having fun with all our pets that have gone before him .

My precious treasures that I have collected and have stored in bins and boxes . I know that you know what I am talking about . So I have started with my buttons. My husband gave me a hand, it took us 2 days on and off to get this done. Hopefully this is the new me... Who am I trying to kid...but it is a good try!

My interpretation of Henri Matisse painting " Dance " Who are you going to be THE NEXT TIME AROUND??

The top picture is of Henri Matisse's painting DANCE. It has been one of my favorite paintings and when I came across a needlepoint book "MUSEUM MASTERPIECES IN NEEDLEPOINT by Brande Ormond I did DANCE in counted cross stitch.
But I had my own idea of how the women would look, so I took a little liberty in the hues and shades of the women. I think that it made it more interesting. Hope Henri won't mind.
So now for many years I have been thinking about going the next step and doing them as Art Figures. They have been dancing in the back of my mind for a long . Till I meet Janice Anderson, a fellow artist . Her Art Figures are so strong! From her I have seen what can be done .

No matter how hard I tried to get the blond figure to look more like the original movment in the painting, she would not cooperate.

Halloween

I had the best time last Saturday sewing up this Halloween Costume. I got an email from my grand daugther Finna , she wanted to know if I could make a Halloween outfit for her American Doll. Told them let me see what I can do, went to to my stash of "this and that" came out with the one and only pattern for a 18' doll that I had and it happen to be a Halloween doll pattern. This is the finshed project. Sure hope that it fits the doll.

Beaded Chakra Art Fetish

I didn't set out to make a Chakra figure . She has been waiting patiently for me to understand what she wanted. Sometimes it takes me years to hear what the dolls tell me. Don't worry family I don't hear voices , but somehow the figures have a way of becoming what they want to be and not what I set out to make. She was a exercise in how to make a small human figure. One day we were doing some beading in our doll club and it all fell into place. I don't know much about Chakras but I made sure that I used the correct colored beads in the correct center of the body. Beside the bead work I have done embroidery with metallic thread .

Chakra means Wheel in Sanskrit.

Bunny Goode - BIG Idea Studio

Last week I went to check out Bunny Goode's new art studio. "BIG Idea Studio". It is a fantastic set up, large space and good lighting. Her studio is at the Monmouth County Airport and while you are taking a class you have a wonderful view of airplanes as they are landing or taking off.

The doll club that I am a member, "Garden State Doll Artisans" meets once a month in the Public Library in Neptune N.J. We decided that we would pick a children book and make a soft sculpture illustration that the library could put on display in November . I picked Cornella Funke's book "Dragon Rider" , since I enjoy the idea of dragons flying around . So here is my interpretation of the book cover.

Last Friday I had a very lovely visit from Mo'a Romig-Boyles. She is a wonderful accomplished painter, sculpture, fiber artist and much more. At this time she is enjoying photography, if interested you can visit her blog and take a look at her work. I have her on my fav.list. She very generously gave me this beautiful handmade doll. We talked about our love of grandchildren, gardening and art. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. The only downside to the visit was I forgot to take pictures, how silly was that!!

Barbara Crooker and Evelyn Lewis, two dear friends . We had a wonderful time.

Fellow doll club member Diane Kerney and her husband came to the show. Diane and I belong to the "Garden State Doll Artisans". The club meets every third Friday in Neptune NJ in the library.

Here Susan Osborne and I meet for the first time. Susan and Karen Louise Fay put this great show together. I thank them both for including me in this wonderful opportunity of exhibiting my art with the other artists . This was a joy and very exciting.

Susans art is full of life , love how she has the girls dancing on air.

It was a thrill to meet Christopher Malone, what exotic and wonderful art he makes . Marvelous attention to his bead work, and love the way he makes the hands. We happen to be in the same autumn 2007 issue of Art Doll Quarterly , very cool.

Aviaryanna and her Halcyons

Halcyon (hal-see-en) are birds from mythology. The belief was that the bird hatched its young in a nest floating on the sea during the winter solstice. They are supposed to have a peaceful,calming influence on the waters. This is where we get the saying "Halcyon day."

I imagine that Aviaryanna is getting ready to send the birds off just before the winter solstice , peacefully waiting for their return.

Doll Show

Cathleen Smith ,CALA, CDP of 1st Choice Home Care contacted me last year and asked if I would be interested in having a show featuring my "Soft Sculptured Art Dolls" She has a interest in local artists and enjoys displaying their work for her clients, their family's and also the public . So in May of last year I had a wonderful two weeks, with some wonderful people.

My Mother and me.....Mom, Laura L Stanick is an multi-award winning artist for her watercolors,oil paintings and sculptures. She also has had art shown here with Cathleen. We are very proud of her many talents

I thought that I would dig around and see if I could find some of my hand work form my childhood. What I really wanted to find was the cross stitch squirrel that I made. It wasn't were I thought it would be, but I found a counted cross stitch apron, embroidered pillow case, counted cross stitch pillow. They were all made in Catholic School when I was 10 years old. To think that I still have them is surprising because we moved quite often . This is some of the work that Sister Monica and Sister Leopa taught us girls.

The apron is counted cross stitch on red and white gingham, DMC cotton floss.

Embroidered pillow case done with variegated pearl cotton.

I always though this design was strange, I never liked the red part. The Nuns would be happy to know that I learned some thing from them. Bless them both.

Here is a doll that has been long in the making. She has been lurking around for about 3 years.

She was always there giving me the "Look".

So here she is. I don't know what she and the birds are up to or her name. She is wearing silks and has a fancy hairdo, fine red leather boots and some jewelery . Who is she?

Cats, Cats, and more Cats

I don't prefer cats over dogs . We have always had cats or dogs in our lives. Right now we have one very old cat named Ed Norton. He was found in a gutter drain as a tiny kitten. The name comes from the T.V. show the "Honeymooners". This spring he is turning 19 years old .
Lucy the dog came to us via our son and daughter-in-law. They found her in Nepal on a visit over 10 years ago.

But for what ever reason cats have been flowing out of my needle work. I started with a very simple pattern that I made up and here they are. They have been a lot of fun to make.

The cats that are standing are about 3" from head to toe and about 31/4 or so long ,not including the tail. They are to small for the sewing machine so they are hand sewn and then needle sculpted . Hope that you enjoy them as I have.

The creative arts, mostly fiber arts are a very big part of who I am . One reason for this I thing, are the woman who I have come to know and love. This learning period for me was while we lived in Iceland were my Mother was born. They started me on this path , they were my foundation.

I never meet Vilheimian Soffia Sveinsdottir, my Mothers Grandmother. I have been told that she had the talent of looking at a dress in a store, going home making her own pattern and when she was finished it was as beautiful as the one in the store window . I feel a kindred spirit with her, I enjoy making my own patterns . Maybe I inhered something special from her.

Vilheimian's daughter, Louisa Tomasdottir, my Grandmother. She loved to crochet and to do counted cross stitch. There are many beautiful samples of her work lovingly treasured in the family. She would share her cross stitch patterns with me from her Danish magazines, I still have some of those magazines to this day. Grandma is wearing her National costume .

Louisa's daughter, Engilbertina Guðrun Asgrimsdottir is my Mother. Better know as Laura Lee Stanick here in America. Mom was the one who took the time to teach me counted cross stitch, I was about 8 years old at the time and we lived in Kopavogir. With different color sewing thread she would count out small parts of the pattern with the correct color and sew a small section at a time with the thin thread. I learned by reading the pattern and sewing with the DMC floss over the thin x's.

That same summer we had a very nice girl named Sigrun that helped my Mother around the house and look after my younger brother. She and I worked on my sewing skills, I have never forgotten her . Together we did a counted cross stitch Squirrel.

At the age of ten we moved to Hafnarfjoður, and I meet two wonderful girls named Gyða and Dissa , we are friends to this day. Gyða was always crocheting clothes for her doll and I thought that was great . Before I knew it she was showing me how to hold the crochet needle and yarn and I was on my way. This is my birthday party & Gyða is standing next to me.

In Catholic school I learned needle point and knitting from Sister Leopa and Sister Monica .

My mothers sister Soffia was a great knitter . She would stop by for a visit and if my knitting "home work" was laying out she would take up my poorly done knitting , fix it and then knit a few rows to give me a helping hand.

Thank you all, Great Grandmother, Grand Mother, Mother, Aunt, girlfriends and two very stern Nuns. With out the gifts that you have shared with me I don't think that I would love life as much as I do.

Hello ... My name is Mary Louisa Klawetter and I am not computer savvy. A needle and thread in my hand or a garden shovel is something my brain understands. Computers , well... that's something different, but I will learn. And the reason for this brain stretching of mine? All you wonderful ,creative fiber artists that seem to be having fun sharing and learning from each other and I would like to join the fun.
